Slot Car Racing and Dinner Cruise

February 18, 2012

WOW !!! What a GREAT time !!!  If you missed the 2nd Annual Corvette Legends Slot Car Races, you really missed out.  A GREAT time was had by all !!!  29 members and guests put em on the starting line and blasted down the pavement in what many folks commented and hope will turn into an annual event.

The biggest compliments and major accolades go out to our Activities Director, Jim Rees, who put together just a FABULOUS week of activities for the club, which corresponded with Daytona Speed Week.  Tuesday was Bench Racing at One Under, with 20 Legends enjoying some pretty good food and of course, some good times with others in our Corvette Family.  Wednesday was the traditional breakfast at Alex’s.  Friday, after meeting at Alex’s, was Autorama, where despite the threat of the first major snow storm of the season, a bunch of Legends walked their butts off for nearly 5 hours, with many comments on how good the show was this year.  There was even a gal there with her Pepto-Bismol PINK Vette.  Hey, at least it’s a Vette.  After the show, of course we had to eat, so off to Los Amigos restaurant on Wayne Rd. in Westland, where the drinks were cold and went down smooth (Nancy R commented that she had forgotten how good those Margaritas were!  whereupon Tom G heartily agreed).

But Saturday was the crowning achievement, with images of Daytona in the background on the big screen TVs, the miniature Vettes, a miniature Cop car, and that “pesky” Mustang rolled, crashed, flew, tumbled, lost a part or two while racing to the finish.  If you didn’t make it to the races this year, you REALLY MISSED OUT!  Tom G really summed up the event when he said “where can you have this much fun for only $5”?  To finish the week off, of course, another eatery, back to an old favorite, Timber Wolf Tavern.  Good friends, good food, and more “adult beverages”.  What more do you want?  Gee, Jim, what do you have planned for next month??? And the months when we get to drag the full size Vettes out of storage???

Of course I need to offer a few personal notes of “thanks” especially to my “pit crew”: Sandy for her “tunnel work”, Denny for getting all the cars into position at the starting line, to Elaine and Sandy for picking up the pieces that were flying off my car, and Sue S for beating me up (literally), and to all the “spotters” who put us all back on the right track (Red! Red! Red!)!  Talk about tense…….  Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle!

And a very very special “thanks” to Tom G for losing a tire in the last crucial moments of the final race laps, allowing that funny gold car (that didn’t look like the other Vettes), to scoot home to a spectacular first place finish for the 2nd year in a row… even much to my surprise …  gotta love it……  Dennis R
